If you’re after a winter warmer then look no further than a luxurious break in the heart of the Lake District. You can be sure of a 4-star welcome, extending to well-behaved dogs, at the delightful Cuckoo Brow Inn, Far Sawrey, near Ambleside. It’s a new entry for the coveted and independent Good Hotel Guide for 2018 plus the team that look after you gained a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award this year (2017).

Located in the heart of UNESCO’s newest World Heritage Site, there are plenty of reasons to get you outdoors but there’s also lots to keep you indoors at Cuckoo Brow. The old Inn has been brought right up-to scratch with its contemporary, country life interiors and its 14 en-suite bedrooms have powerful showers, deep baths, flat screen TVs and comfy beds. At this pub-cum-small -hotel you can warm yourself at a log fire, sup hand pulled beers from local breweries and tuck into hearty meals, or snacks, many made of locally sourced ingredients.

Cuckoo Brow is a short walk from Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top home in Near Sawrey, open for the new season from the February 10. Also nearby is the quirky Victorian Viewing Station, Claife Heights with its dramatic lake views of Windermere. There are good local walks, from which you can discover this less well-known western shore of England’s longest lake, and plenty of mountains to climb. If you are a cyclist there are trails and for those in need of retail or café therapy the very pretty towns of Hawkshead and Ambleside are close-by.
