It’s game on for these producers in Lancashire and the Lake District

You can always be sure to find a great selection of seasonal game meat at this farm shop. As well as hunting their own game, owners Anthony and John are keen shooters, they also have other suppliers who can provide anything from quail to venison.

Established in 1970 by the Gornall family, Honeywell’s has grown from strength-to-strength. Outgrowing their barn space in 2003, they moved into a purpose-built farm shop which sells a huge range of locally produced meats from the butchery, over 100 styles of cheese and other goodies in the delicatessen.

Furness Fish, Poultry and Game

Shrimps were once the main part of this Flookburgh business, supplying hotels and restaurants in Cumbria and Lancashire.

But have the years have passed their remit has spread to include game. Their choice of game, primarily from the Lake District, is extensive including grouse, pigeon, rabbit, mallard and partridge. They also have wild Lakeland venison that is sourced from estates around Cumbria and North Lancashire.

Udale Speciality Foods

This Morecambe business has a well earned reputation providing produce to UK chefs in fine dining restaurants and hotels, the licensed trade, institutional catering and retail catering operations. They take pride in the connections they have established with farmers, particularly in Cumbria, to source some of the best meat available.

Udale also excels in game and has venison, grouse, pheasants, roe deer, mallard and a Cumbrian diced game mix including game that has been aged in their specialist Himalayan salt chamber.

Fayre Game

Quail meat is becoming an increasingly popular source of protein in the UK. Fayre Game in Rufford is one of the largest producers of quail eggs in the UK. Birds are hatched on the farm and reared in barns where they are free to fly in a natural environment.

Fayre Game also produce a wide range of game products including wild shot pheasant and partridge in seas and shot pigeon all year round.

Inn at Whitewell

Although strictly not a supplier, it is difficult not to mention this superb country inn as it celebrates the game season so well. In season, go for locally shot game including Lancashire Moor grouse and pheasant and partridge from Dunsop. Set in a secluded spot on the banks of the River Hodder within the Duchy of Lancaster’s Estate, you’ll also be rewarded with terrific views over the beautiful Forest of Bowland.

Albert Matthews

This multi award-winning business in Bury Market was founded over 75 years ago by Albert Matthews. Three generations later the same values of selling only the finest quality meat continue to the present day.

Only meat from traditional breeds reared on the Cumbrian Fells in Lancashire and Cheshire is sold as well as the family’s closely guarded sausage and dry cured bacon secret recipes. This also extends to game and they sell wild rabbit, partridge and grouse.
