Beating the drum for Southport was very much on the menu when Lancashire Life and the Ramada Plaza joined forces to stage a reader lunch in this classic resort.

The kitchen team worked tirelessly to produce a marvellous lunch of tender lamb followed by a beautifully constructed custard tart and tuille biscuit dessert for more than 40 guests in the hotel’s new 200-seater events and weddings dining room. Speakers highlighted the many positive aspects of Southport and guests were urged to act as ambassadors .

General Manager of the modern four-star hotel, Enda Rylands, said many people in Southport didn’t realise what tremendous facilities were on their doorsteps. ‘Here, we have a 113 bedroom hotel with a 1,600 seat conference centre next door and beside us is new casino – neither Manchester nor Liverpool can match that,’ he told guests. ‘In fact, together they form the largest complex of its type in the north.

‘Southport has so much going for it including many internationally-recognised events.’ These will include the Senior Open Championship at Royal Birkdale for the first from July 25-28 with the likes of Greg Norman, Tom Watson and Mark O’Meara eligible to play.

John Taylor, Sefton’s head of arts and culture, told guests of the £18 million refurbishment project at The Atkinson centre in Lord Street and the ripple effect it and the many other attractions in the town were likely to have on visitor numbers and businesses in the area.

Ramada celebrates

The team at the Ramada Plaza has been celebrating after achieving international recognition for its customer satisfaction. The hotel is part of Wyndham, one of the world’s largest hotel groups. The company recognised it as having one of the best customer satisfaction rates of all Wyndham hotels across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Now, the hotel, which opened in 2008 as part of a £40 million waterfront development, is in the running for Hotel of the Year in the Liverpool City Region Annual Tourism Awards. It is one of only three hotels in Southport to be shortlisted.
