Venue

Part of the dining hub which is the transformation of the noble old Corn Exchange, the TV chef’s eatery has 250 covers, with bar and outside terrace in addition to the main restaurant. Attractive bleached wood panelling and pale blue upholstery give a Mediterranean feel, but the most remarkable element of the decor is the vast number of photos of Gino himself, in grip-and-grin mode with seemingly every celebrity in the world.

Ambience

Nice strong Italian feel: informal, youthful, bustling, loudish funky music on our visit.

Menu

Covers all Italian bases: pasta, pizza, risotto, salads, meaty mains, seafood. Sadly, two of the dishes we wanted were off, so we chose starters of calamari (£6) - succulent hunks of squid with crispy courgette chips - and a classic Italian rice salad with tuna, egg and pecorino (£6) which were very good. A main of chicken in marsala (£13) was really tasty: smoky, sweet intense flavours, but it needed a side dish, and I chose a rocket, pine nut and pomegranate salad (£3) which was a lively mix of peppery, sweet and astringent. My companion’s spaghetti with lobster (£17) was a generous and tasty portion - half a lobster, in fact.

Desserts of orange polenta cake with ice cream (£5) and lemon and lime sorbet (£4) were both subtly accomplished. Superb coffee.

Efficient, friendly.

Cost

Under £80 for three courses for two with a couple of beers and coffees.
