Sharrow Bay, UllswaterSharrow Bay, Ullswater

Sharrow Bay is the original Country House Hotel, idyllically located on the peaceful Eastern shores of Ullswater, with one of the best views in England. Almost touching the water, guests can enjoy the southerly panorama down the lake towards the central mountains, topped by England’s third highest - Helvellyn with its famous ‘edges’. Despite its seclusion at the foot of some of the remotest stretches of the Lake District, it is only minutes from Penrith and the M6, making ‘getting away from it all’ easily accessible.

Sharrow Bay enjoys a well-earned reputation for its classic Fine Dining, with a choice of lunch and dinner menus, from classic through to dedicated culinary experiences. Head Chef Mark Teasdale is a local hill farmer’s son, who was passionate about the use of local produce long before it became a fashionable trend; Head Pastry Chef Paula Richardson is Albert Roux trained, and has worked in America and Europe for Michel Roux. You’re in very capable hands.

To complement our menus the hotel stocks an exceptional wine cellar, under the expert care of the Head and Master Sommeliers; in conjunction with a long-standing local supplier, who owns his own Rhone Vineyard. There are only 230 Master Sommeliers in the world, and Kelvin is number 39. In consideration of Mark and Paula’s menus, a ‘Wine Flight’ can be booked to accompany the evening Tasting Menu, for those who wish to explore a full culinary journey.

Lunchtime offers the great value, nostalgic, Sharrow Through the Ages lunch, a three course menu from a choice of nine dishes, revisiting dishes from thousands of past menus; available every day but Sundays - when traditional Sunday Luncheon rules.

The Gourmet menu extends the dining experience, with a choice of three courses from 16 dishes, but also including some set ‘pre’ dishes or Amuse Bouche. The evening Tasting menu includes the same but extends the menu to eight set courses.

Sticky Toffee Pudding was created here in the 1970s by Francis Coulson, anecdotally inspired by Brian Sack’s time as a Spitfire fighter pilot and his encounters with Canadian Air Force pilots and their fondness for Maple Syrup. Given postwar austerity and before the advent of food air miles, necessity was the mother of invention. The exact recipe is top secret, and employees sign a contract promising never to divulge the exact magic that makes it so great. We even offer a cupcake version with the classic Afternoon Teas.

All enjoyed in our lakeside restaurant with its panoramic views of the most beautiful lake in England, (or as the Huffington Post credited us with being, one of the top ten lakeside locations in the world).

From Autumn through to Spring we host a selection of special events, from Wine Dinners to Burns Night, including a traditional Old World Christmas! Sign up for our emails to be alerted when we are running these, they’re very popular and book up well in advance, especially as we offer a favourable room rate deal to accompany the dinners.
