Archant

You would never guess that these tranquil scenes were captured right by one of the busiest motorways in the country.

Based on the site of an old quarry, The Brockholes Nature Reserve opened in 2011 with the aim of creating habitats that would attract all types of birds and wildlife. It’s certainly achieved that with a rich diversity of species now well established within the area which in turn has attracted well over half a million visitors to the site which is located just off junction 31 on the M6 motorway.

As you can see from these photos by our talented readers, there is plenty for the photographer to capture here. There are the spectacular colours of the sunrises and sunsets and of course the diverse selection of birds such as herons, owls and bitterns. If you’re lucky enough, there have been sightings of roe deer in the spring and starling murmurations in the winter.

If you want to explore the grounds then take a look at this walk around Brockholes we compiled when Brockholes first opened. A lot has changed since then, but it provides a good framework to spending a few hours there.

If you do take some photos during your trip to Brockholes, we would love to see them. Upload your images to the Lancashire Life reader photo gallery.
