Roll up for big city tour

Even if you know Liverpool well, it can have more to offer if you see it from a different angle. You could hop on board an open top bus tour of the city, like our photographer John Cocks did, or there are plenty of other ways to tour Liverpool. Regular tours offer you the chance to travel the streets by coach, by car, by bicycle or on foot with routes tailored to specific interests. Some tours take you behind the scenes in some of the beautiful buildings, others focus on the city’s history, pubs or ghosts. You’re never far from the Beatles in Liverpool so they’re likely to be mentioned on whichever tour you take. Rumour has it that Paul McCartney takes the open top bus tours when he’s back in Liverpool, relying on people assuming he wouldn’t to ensure no-one pesters him.

Get some culture

Museum of LiverpoolMuseum of Liverpool

Liverpool is home to a stunning collection of museums and galleries which house incredible treasures from all over the world. The new Museum of Liverpool – the controversial box-like building on the water front – tells the story of the city and its people but there’s also the World Museum, the International Slavery Museum and a maritime museum. There’s plenty of galleries around the city too, such as the Bluecoat Arts Centre and the Walker Art Gallery which host a range of exhibitions, displays and events throughout the year. Current exhibitions at the Walker Gallery include the early work of David Hockney.

Follow the Fab Four

Think Liverpool, think Beatles. They’ve been a key part of the city’s tourism industry for decades and interest in the Fab Four from across the world is showing no signs of abating. The dedicated fan can visit the homes where John and Paul grew up, take Beatles-themed tours of the city which take in key sites such as Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields, and visit the Beatles museum at Albert Dock. And not far away is the Cavern, the legendary basement bar on Mathew Street where they played almost 300 times and which still plays host to an eclectic mix of groups and performers.

Make a night of it

Nowhere does a night out like Liverpool. You’re never far from a bar, pub or restaurant and there is more entertainment on offer than you could shake Doddy’s tickling stick at. With top class theatre, comedy and live music happening somewhere in the city every night, you’re bound to find something to suit your tastes. If you don’t fancy the Beatles tribute act sure to be on in one of the pubs, or the new young band on down the road, try the Philharmonic Hall where the programme this month includes works by Elgar and Dvorak and a performance by Lancashire’s own Russell Watson.

A shopper’s paradise

Few places can boast as great a city centre shopping experience as Liverpool. Whether you like chic boutiques, big name stores or small independent shops, you’ll find it here somewhere. The £500m Liverpool One mall – the largest open air shopping centre in the UK – opened in 2008 and has helped propel the city into the top five shopping destinations in the country. The Metquarter is home to stylish fashion stores and you’ll find high fashion (and pretty high prices) in Cavern Walks.
