Whatever happens in the pool at London's impressive new Aquatics Centre, Rob Bale is determined to enjoy himself at the Olympics.

Whatever happens in the pool at Londons impressive new Aquatics Centre, Rob Bale is determined to enjoy himself at the Olympics.
Rob, who turns 22 a week before the opening ceremony, will compete in the 4x200m freestyle relay and he said: If we dont get a medal it wont be through a lack of effort, but I think as a relay team we have a better chance than we have had before and I would be disappointed really if there arent a few successes from the team.

A home Olympics isnt going to happen again in my career possibly in my lifetime so I intend to make the most of it. Once the swimming finishes, Im looking forward to soaking up the atmosphere in the Olympic village and seeing some of the other events.

A former pupil of Lancasters Ripley St Thomas School, Rob started swimming at the Carnforth and District Swimming Club, and he received plenty of family support his father was Scottish universities champion, his aunt came close to representing Great Britain at the Commonwealth Games and his grandfather was a coach.

I think because they have been through the training programmes makes it easier for me, they know what I am going through and what I need to put in, said Rob, who moved to Stirling last year to be re-united with his old coach from a swimming club in Preston.

His first major senior international competition was the World Championships in Rome in 2009 and he added: The home fans there created a great atmosphere so I cant wait to get to London and feel that atmosphere on home soil. It was pretty special at the trails and there were only a couple of thousand people there I can only imagine what it will be like when there are 17,000 people there.
