Nestled on the eastern shores of Ullswater, surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the Lake District, stands the original country house hotel with an award-winning restaurant, an extensive wine cellar and 17 individually styled bedrooms nestled in 12 acres of tree fringed waterside gardens.

Sharrow Bay was officially opened at Easter 1949 by Francis Coulson, with five bedrooms, no alcohol was served and the cost was just over a pound to stay the night. In 1952 he was joined by Brian Sack, an ex-Spitfire pilot, who freed Mr Coulson to concentrate in the kitchen.

His swansong was the invention of sticky toffee pudding and today his passion for luxury cuisine continues in the hands of his protégé, head chef Mark Teasdale, who joined Sharrow Bay in February 1997.

Mark is the son of a local traditional hill farmer and welded to the ingrained food ethos he was trained in is his passionate belief in supporting local food producers. As to be expected, having been brought up on a hill farm with Herdwick sheep, the local lamb is a firm favourite and his signature dish.

Mark and his talented team use the very finest of local produce, the most knowledgeable and dedicated suppliers this wonderful area has to offer to create exiting dishes which are served in the Lakeside Dining Room with enchanting views across the lake and fells beyond.
