Pub Review - The Running Pump, Catforth

The Running Pump, Catforth Road, Catforth, Preston

Pubs are closing at an alarming rate across the country. But the Running Pump at Catforth near Preston is living proof that with a bit of creative thinking, a pub can be put back at the heart of a community. This could be a blueprint for the future of rural pubs.

This is not only a pub, its also Lancashires smallest corner shop selling all of lifes essentials, from toilet roll to tinned peas, cleaning products and (their best-seller) washing lines. Theres also a book exchange scheme which donates money to the Hearing Dogs charity, a pool table, dart board, tropical fish, comfy settees and live entertainment at weekends.

No frills. A central horseshoe bar with three rooms off. Small wooden tables, some chairs and a bench seat round the perimeter. Homely knick-knacks abound and the roaring fire adds to the relaxed atmosphere. Children are catered for with a dinky play area outside and some toys inside.

Good quality, home cooked, and varied. Theres a range of Oriental and south Asian dishes alongside staples such as fish and chips, Cumberland sausage and lamb shank, and the mark of any quality Lancashire pub kitchen the pies are good too. This is also the home of the foot long lattice, a giant sausage roll which should be enough to satisfy any hunger. But if not, try the Man v Food challenge and attempt to devour its big brother, the yard long lattice. You win a t-shirt if you manage it.

Over-60s can take advantage of meal offers on Mondays, but prices for food, drinks and in the shop are very reasonable all week. Theres also a take away service available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings (but not for the huge sausage rolls).

All the usuals plus a pleasing selection of Robinsons and Hartleys ales and a small wine list.

This could be the friendliest pub in Lancashire. Warm welcomes, jolly chatter and broad smiles.

Our verdict

The decorating isnt finished yet and even when it is, this will not be a modern glossy pub, but its all the better for its homely charms and rough edges.
