From comedians and actors, to singers and physicists, Lancashire has produced endless talent over the years…

9. Sir Ian McKellen

Many know Ian as Gandalf from ‘Lord of the Rings’ or as Magneto in the ‘X-Men’, but we know him as a pure-bred Lancastrian. Ian was born in Burnley, grew up in Wigan and later Bolton, where he attended Bolton School for boys. These days Ian is picking up awards left, right and centre with six Laurence Olivier Awards, two Critics Choice Awards and a Golden Globe Award to name a few – he was even knighted for his service to the performing arts. Telly addicts will have watched him in British sitcom Vicious alongside co-star Derek Jacobi, the show is due to return for a special in 2016.
