This year Chiropractic Associates celebrates 30 years of delivering primary spine care in Preston. Dr Jeff Shurr, American Doctor of Chiropractic and his team offer evidence based, cost effective care of back and neck pain, headaches and related disorders of the upper and lower limbs. Dr Shurr shares his story.

Suffering back pain, neck pain and headaches after a motorcycle accident in 1979, I knew the benefits of chiropractic care when medical management had failed. Ten years later I graduated from The Los Angeles College of Chiropractic.

Jacqui, my Prestonian wife, and I were living in California when I qualified. I visited Preston and was impressed with the local rock climbing and cycling community. We relocated to the UK.

I joined the British Chiropractic Association and we opened our first clinic in Preston. Within a year we brought in associates and moved to larger premises. We began training new graduate chiropractors and two years later we opened a second practice near Lytham and then a third in Blackburn.

We worked with Preston MP Audrey Wise, member of the health select committee, to promote chiropractic. It was a proud day when we celebrated the Chiropractors Act 1994, registering the profession and forming the General Chiropractic Council!

We participated in two research projects, integrating chiropractic into general practice and hospital physiotherapy, and we were one of the first clinics in the UK to offer chiropractic services to the NHS.

Shortly afterwards the College of Chiropractors was formed. I coordinated the North West, Mersey and North Wales Postgraduate Faculty. Over the years I’ve held positions as Clinic Trainer, Regional Clinical Tutor and Continuing Professional Development Tutor and was made a Fellow. We later received Royal Charter and became The Royal College of Chiropractors.

My oldest son Jon recently qualified as a chiropractor! He received the European Chiropractic Union

Prize, Graduate of the Year and joined the practice in 2018.
