10 of the best dining hotels in Lancashire and the Lake District

Our guide to some of the best places to eat in Lancashire and the Lake District where the accommodation is as stellar as the food.
The Cartford Inn, Little Eccleston
It’s been a good year for The Cartford Inn. As well as being named in the Top 50 Gastropubs list, they were also awarded two AA Rosettes. But the accommodation is also proving a star attraction. This lovely riverside inn, in the Wyre countryside, has two super pods in its grounds.
Owners Patrick and Julie Beaume brought together artists and artisans to work with them to create the luxury, eco friendly and sustainable places to stay. Choose from Ziggy, with a subtle David Bowie theme and furnished with items from the old Regent Cinema in Blackpool, or The Robin’s Nest. This is decorated with lovely touches including a piece of driftwood rescued from the river.
Hipping Hall, Cowan Bridge, near Kirkby Lonsdale
This attractive old Lancashire manor house has racked up an enormous array of awards since its takeover by Andrew Wildsmith, who also has two Lakeland destinations – The Rybeck and the Michelin-starred Forest Side.
The dining room is a beautifully quirky old cruck barn and the food from Lytham-born Oli Martin’s kitchen is sublime. It currently holds three AA rosettes. It’s a great walking area and the bedrooms in the main house and in the recently opened stable block have everything you need for a luxurious end to the day.
Moor Hall, Aughton
In the past year Mark Birchall and his team have made a big impression on the food and drink industry. AA rosettes, a Michelin star and a Lancashire Life Food & Drink Award are just some of the accolades the Adlington chef and his team have enjoyed.
The rooms at this stunning Grade II listed building, which dates back to the 13th century, are also designed to make an impression. There are seven luxurious bedrooms, all with lake or garden views. The most luxurious, the Mulberry Suite, has a gorgeous fireplace, emperor bed, a freestanding bath and open marble fireplace in the bathroom.
Derby Arms, Longridge
It’s been four years since this popular Seafood Pub Company venue opened. The Longridge pub has a new look with a less formal interior – think comfortable chairs around the log fire and places to spread out and relax. Outside has also had a makeover with a new beer garden at the back and a south-facing terrace to the front where you can watch the world go by.
Fish and seafood, as you’d expect, are at the heart of the food offer with new menus each day to make the most of the best catches that have landed that morning as well as the best seasonal and regional produce. The rooms are beautifully furnished providing a luxurious place to stay near to some of Lancashire’s best countryside and market towns.
Eagle and Child, Ramsbottom
This popular award-winning pub has been through a major makeover. A new stunning interior complete with orangery overlooking superb views has made sure even more diners can enjoy the food on offer here.
There is also first class accommodation to match with five new boutique bedrooms. Featuring artwork by Fran Giffard, these owl inspired bedrooms are luxurious and full of colour. If you want to wake up to a fabulous view, be sure to book Tawny Owl or Barn Owl.
Combine your love of food and wine with a stay at Northcote. This stunning establishment, named AA and Visit England Hotel of the Year, has rooms all with their own individual character. Some even have their own private garden terrace.
You can choose to stay in a Manor House room or the Garden Lodge. It has eight rooms, including a master suite, luxurious lounge and a pantry, kitchen and boot and drying rooms – a great place to rest after a day out in the Ribble Valley. Dinner in its Michelin starred restaurant, headed up by super chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen, is a real treat.
The Cottage in the Wood, Whinlatter
Fall asleep to the babbling of a beck and wake up to birdsong at this restaurant with rooms, located in England’s only mountain forest. The Cottage offers a peaceful location with a vast array of wildlife as well as cosy rooms.
The building dates back to 1640 but the interiors have a contemporary, bright and luxury feel with those little extras that make your stay special. Head chef Rich Collingwood cooks up a feast of local produce in the Cottage in the Wood kitchens from Herdwick hogget to fish and shellfish from Whitehaven.
The Forest Side, Grasmere
Proud Lake District chef Kevin Tickle has been flying the flag for produce from his county since he walked through the doors at The Forest Side. He loves to forage food to serve up in his Michelin star restaurant. It’s an approach that has been extended to the rooms at the Grasmere venue.
Each bedroom is named after the trees you can find in the gardens and they are designed by Lancaster-based interior designer James Mackie. Think Zoffany wallpapers, Farrow & Ball paint and super-comfortable beds that have been made to an exclusive design for owners, Wildsmith Hotels, and contain over 10,000 springs.
Spinning Block Hotel, Holmes Mill, Clitheroe
The oldest part of the mill has been converted into a hotel with 16 lovely bedrooms. The original fabric and features of the former weaving shed have been preserved paying homage to Lancashire’s rich industrial heritage. The rooms are beautifully decorated with contemporary designs.
What is even better about a stay here is having the Bistro, Bar and Grill to eat at as well as Bowland Food Hall, where you can check out some of the best Lancashire produce, and the Bowland Beer Hall where you can sample Bowland Brewery’s beders made on site.
The Punch Bowl Inn, Crosthwaite
The Punch Bowl Inn has luxury, award winning hotel accommodation offering the perfect place to rest your head after eating in their top class restaurant. It’s in a beautiful Lake District setting and all nine of the rooms are named after past incumbents of Crosthwaite Parish Church, including Edward Whitelock who was vicar in the 16th century.
The kitchen is led by young, multi award-winning chef Arthur Bridgeman Quin who, with his team, cooks up classic food. He uses a strong line-up of local producers including Udale’s in Morecambe for some of their meats, Cartmel Valley Game and McClures in Windermere for dried goods.
