The people of Newburgh, a pretty community between Burscough and Parbold, know how to enjoy themselves. It started in the 14th century with an annual fair which traditionally included sporting contests, aunt sallies and merry-go-rounds.
It was revived in the 1950s by the local vicar and it was restored once again in the 1970s. Since then, it has been held annually thanks to the dedication of a group of local mothers who are helped on the day by villagers.
The 2011 event turned out to be a roaring success with a Disney-themed procession which involved crowning 11-year-old Natalie Hanlon as rose queen followed by a ball in the evening. The mums of Newburgh made it a great day out.
