Visitors from the earthquake-hit country joined tourism chiefs and generous locals at Holbeck Ghyll in Windermere for the five course event.

Organised together with the Lakes Hospitality Association, the Champagne lunch and charity auction brought in 4,350, which will contribute towards the Red Cross efforts to build pre-fabricated homes for those made homeless by the March 11 disaster.

Holbeck Ghyll manager Andrew McPherson said: Japanese tourism is incredibly important to the Lake District and our community has been terribly upset by the events of the last six weeks.
