This atmospheric picture of a boathouse on Rydal Water has won our annual hunt for Lancashire’s best amateur photographer.

It was taken by Matthew Aspden of Chadderton and our panel of judges selected it from the thousands of entries which were uploaded to our website since the competition was launched in April.

Matthew’s prize is a 50MP Canon EOS 5Ds camera worth £2999 provided by competition sponsors Wilkinson Cameras.

Matthew, a teacher at St Herbert’s RC primary school in Oldham, has been taking pictures for seven years after a visit to Derwent Water sparked a new hobby. ‘I had only been to the Lake District as a young child and I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. I had never owned a camera, but when I came home I saved up and bought one.’

He has since joined Oldham Photography Society and has become a regular visitor to the Lakes, particularly to Rydal Water. ‘I absolutely love the place,’ said Mathhew, a father-of-two. ‘It’s so calm and tranquil and there’s never anyone there early in the morning. It’s my favourite spot, especially at sunrise.

‘On the day I took this picture I got up at two thirty in the morning and drove up there to wait for the sun to come up. The conditions at that time of day are wonderfully atmospheric and because the air is clear and the light is good, you get good photographs.’

Our runners up were John Hartley from Haslingden who entered his shot of horses at Helsmhore and Bernard Noblett of Euxton for his picture of the dove cote at Rivington. They will both be able to hone their skills on a photography training course at Wilkinson’s purpose-built learning centre in Liverpool, or at one of their ten stores across the North West.

The judges – picture editor John Cocks, David Parkinson from Wilkinson Cameras and Lancashire Life editor Roger Borrell – selected a shortlist of 12 images which you can see in the 2016 Lancashire Life calendar.
