Justin Moorhouse

Actor and comedian Justin Moorhouse has been busy in lockdown, helping around his community and hosting online quizzes and games of bingo. He kept a diary for us throughout May, his record of an extraordinary time

A really bizarre start to May, I should have been in Bath to do some warm ups for the Edinburgh Fringe, instead I spent the first Friday of the month working at the food bank where I volunteer, hosting a quiz on Zoom with Lee Sharpe and Harry Redknapp and then recording my mate Jeff Stevenson for my podcast after he’d been stuck on a boat from Oz for over a month.

Had to take a black and white photo of myself for an online gig that was happening. Took it and realised with my lockdown beard I was looking more like Mandy Patinkin who plays Saul Berenson in Homeland.

No work. Well, not normal stuff, I’ve been asked to host a bingo game online. I buy a bingo machine, practice my calling and select what I think may be an appropriate outfit. I try it on and send it out on social media. Someone grabs a still from my appearance some years ago in Shameless. Nothing much changes, hey?

My daughter’s 15th birthday. In lockdown. I’m sad for her, but she makes the most of it and is as kind and caring as she usually is. I’m inordinately proud of her. Not least as she’s had to deal with a bunch if medical issues over the years which she’s done without once moaning. She’s perfectly well now but I still can’t forget how tiny she was when she was born: 2 ½lbs and 11 weeks premature and spent all that time hooked up in an incubator. She looked like the back of the telly.

8th

To Media City to present my Radio Manchester show. It’s been a comfort and release to get out of the house at least once a week and see somewhere else other than these four walls and the same blinking dog walk every day.

9th

Host the family quiz. Everyone moans because they don’t know who this is in the Before They Were Famous round - do you? It’s not Wayne Rooney. Answer at the end.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

15th

My birthday. My favourite restaurant, Lily’s from Ashton Under Lyne, aren’t open, but they are making meals for the NHS workers. And it seems me. I was delighted.

18th

A good day for me and Coco

my dog. She seized on some dropped pizza and I went on Radio 5 Live from home with Colin Murray, Rebecca Adlington, Edith Bowman, Ian Holloway and Clinton Baptiste from Phoenix Nights.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

19th

Out into the hills for the first time in ages. Up over the Snake Pass and on to the moors for a socially distanced hike with the dogs and my mate Paul. I’ve missed the countryside, and him.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

24th

A busy day collecting and delivering six prescriptions for Stockport Car Scheme and then taking a woman for a hospital appointment. I’ve been volunteering here and at the food bank since lockdown as many of the volunteers who are a bit older have had to stay away. It’s not much to do really, but I enjoy it and the chats I have with the patients are often the only ones they may have all day. I’m blessed, I know, and I have to say it’s given me some material.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

30th

I don’t drink, but these days there’s so many no alcohol beers. I was chuffed to receive a couple of boxes of amazing ones from my mates Kevin and Graeme from TM Sports. We’d worked together on some online quizzes with sporting stars and businesspeople raising money for the NHS.

Oh, and the answer to that picture quiz is Bill Clinton.
