Cricketer-turned-broadcaster David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd explains why the Crown Ground in Accrington is so special to him
My business is cricket, but my sport is football and I have never moved away from Accrington Stanley. From the demise of the club in the 1960s through the years in non-league where the club was living hand to mouth, they’ve always been my club.
The number of people who dedicated their lives to putting the club back on the map is amazing and now we have an owner who is local and has a real community vision. I think the club is bloody marvellous. Stanley is all about community.
When I was a lad I’d go to Stanley, pick up a brick which were stacked by the turnstiles, pay my threepence and walk in carrying a Nori brick. Can you imagine carrying a brick into a football ground now? I’d walk in and get myself down to the front and stand on my brick so I could see over the wall.
